Zodiac chronograph from 1960s
Zodiac chronograph from 1960s
For sale is a beautiful Zodiac Chronograph from the 1960s (I don’t know the exact year). I fully serviced it last year. It has a Landeron 248 movement, which is every bit as good as the Valjoux 7733. You can see how amazing the movement looks in one of the pictures. Water never got into it. The caseback and movement bridge are both marked Marcel Watch Co. I know that during this time period there were companies that made these watch movements for other companies. I think that might be what happened here.
The watch has a stainless steel caseback and a plated base metal case. The button tubes and the crown tube are all stainless steel. The mid case shows wear typical wear for these. The caseback has multiple servicing marks so the original owner of the watch liked it and took care of it.
The dial is original and has small marks as well as some small scratches on it. It about matches the damage on the mid case. I don’t know the history on the watch, but I have a theory. The previous owner may have been a very active person and based on the dial it looks like the crystal got smashed at some point. The handset is vintage and in very good original condition. However, in contrast to the dial the hands are in perfect condition with tridium lume. My theory on this is that with all of the servicing marks on the caseback and looking at the perfect gun blued hands, the original hands may have been damaged when the crystal was smashed so the watchsmith replaced them. Other than the hands the watch is completely original, but the crystal is NOS.
